Aimhigher - what does this mean?

Aimhigher is an umbrella term to describe initiatives aimed at widening participation in UK higher education, particularly among students who are considered less likely to aspire to Higher Education: minority groups, those with disability, those who may be at risk of underachievement through inherent barriers to learning, who may be from an area of relative deprivation or have a relatively low socio-economic status. divider

At events: Am I allowed to bring my MP3 player?

It is ok to bring your MP3 player but please be aware that the you are solely responsible for it! divider

At events: Can I go in a group with my friends?

Unfortunately we cannot guarantee that you will be placed in a mentor group with friends. But please remember that this is a great opportunity to make many new friends!divider

At events: Do I have to do a presentation?

On many of our Summer Schools project teams will make a formal presentation of their project outcomes to hosts and guests on the final day. divider

At events: Do I need to bring a towel with me?

If the course is residential, towels and bedding are provided in the Halls of Residence.divider

At events: Do I need to bring any money?

It is probably sensible to bring a small amount of cash to the Summer School (for snacks, drinks etc.) but you certainly should not need more than £20.divider

Do I need to bring sports kit?

Yes, on all residential events there is usually a sports evening (weather and ability permitting!).divider

Gifted and Talented - What does this mean?

A term used to identify students who have 'one or more abilities developed to a level significantly ahead of their year group (or with the potential to develop those abilities)'divider

How do I know where to find the Summer School?

Once you have completed all the forms mentioned in the previous question you will receive a set of 'Joining Instructions' (which include further details about the course and a map). Joining Instructions are usually sent out a month prior to the course.divider

I would like to practise my musical instrument while I am away on the Summer School; am I allowed to

Yes please bring it with you and notify your mentor and the course leader so that they can allocate a time for you to practise.divider

If I have applied for a Summer School when will I hear if I have a place?

You will receive a confirmation letter, a medical/dietary form, a code of behaviour form and a photo consent request in advance of the Summer School. divider

What do I need to wear?

During the summer school informal clothing is the norm. Clothing that obscures an individual’s face is not allowed on any of the College’s campuses, except when required for health and safety or work-related reasons. Please bring only one bag/suitcase and one rucksack. Please bring your own necessary toiletry requirements. Towels are provided. Lab coats and safety glasses will be provided as required. Open-toed shoes must not be worn in the workshops or laboratories.divider

What is HEFCE?

HEFCE is the Higher Education Funding Council for England. It works in partnership with institutions to promote and fund high-quality, cost-effective teaching and research, meeting the diverse needs of students, the economy and society. divider

What will I eat?

On residential courses breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided; breakfast and dinner are generally counter meals and lunch is provided by way of a lunch voucher that can be used in the Imperial College shop. You may like to bring a small amount of money if you wish to purchase any extra drinks and snacks.divider

Where will I stay?

All students stay in single study bedrooms in Imperial College Halls of Residence. Males and females will be housed in separate accommodation alongside male and female staff supervisors.divider

Will it be safe?

All students and staff on an event must wear their ID badges at all times. The Halls of Residence and buildings on campus have swipe access to avoid access for the general public. Staff, including all mentors have obtained Criminal Records Bureau checks via Exscitec, in compliance with our safe recruitment policy and procedures. Staff are trained in Safeguarding the Welfare of young persons participating in our events.
